History

How it all began.

When Dave Garbo was thirteen years old, he began fishing for lobster. Getting up at three o’clock in the morning, he would set traps in Connecticut’s New Haven Harbor and then go off to school. By the age of seventeen, he was running a seventy-foot offshore lobster boat based in Stonington, Connecticut and catching lobsters off the Continental Shelf, 150 miles from shore.

After close to ten years of offshore fishing, Dave, at the age of 26, established Garbo Lobster Company in 1983. With just a few fiberglass tanks in Stonington Borough, Connecticut, the organization was born. Today, the company is a leader in the seafood industry.

When Dave Garbo was thirteen years old, he began fishing for lobster. He would get up at three o’clock in the morning, set traps in New Haven Harbor in Connecticut, then go off to school. By the time he was seventeen years old, he was running a seventy-foot offshore lobster boat based in Stonington, Connecticut, and catching lobsters off the Continental Shelf, 150 miles off shore, on four-day journeys.

In 1983, at the age of 26 and close to ten years of offshore fishing, he established Garbo Lobster Company, Inc., with just a few fiberglass tanks in Stonington Borough, Connecticut.

The company quickly grew as he accumulated more and more customers, eventually landing customers in Europe as well as large local grocery stores. By the early 1990’s it was clear that the small facility he tried to utilize to supply millions of pounds of lobster a year was too small. He built a new state-of-the-art facility in Groton, Connecticut in 2001 which has a 300,000 pound capacity. He also began essential relationships with lobster co-ops in Maine and Canada to be able to supply the growing number of customers. That year he purchased a location in Hancock, Maine which holds 400,000 pounds of lobsters in the tidal pound and 600,000 pounds in storage, as well as another facility in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, holding one million pounds of lobsters. Overall, Garbo Lobster is able to hold a total of 2.3 million pounds of lobsters at a time, serving to sell 26 million pounds annually, making it the largest wholesale distributor of live lobsters in the world.

Seeing the changing market, he partnered with East Coast Seafood in 2012 to purchase and renovate the old Bumble Bee Tuna plant in Prospect Harbor, Maine, which processes lobster meat and frozen lobster tails to other industry demands, mainly high-end restaurant chains, cruise ships and specialty food purveyors.

Garbo Lobster continues to serve customers around the world with both live and processed lobsters and is the most common name in the fresh seafood market for exceptional quality, price and value. Dave Garbo continues to work seven days a week, keeping the industry moving forward to supply the world with fresh lobster at the best price as well as offering hundreds of fishermen and other industry workers essential employment in the seafood industry.
